CASTING NOTICE
IN Series seeks extras/supernumeraries for Toni Morrison’s Desdemona
As part of a two-night theater experience, IN Series is producing a reading of Toni Morrison’s play Desdemona. Morrison's work wrests narrative agency from the men of Shakespeare’s tragedy, and gives it to the women he did and did not write: Desdemona herself has the opportunity to make this finally her story; and in the same way Morrison takes ownership of Shakespeare’s narrative with the creation of Barbary, the enslaved African woman who died caring for the young Desdemona, to be performed by acclaimed international musical artist Claron McFadden. Through music, poetry, and conversation, these two characters walk through the afterlife and finally approach understanding, and they bring the audience with them.
We are casting three (3) extras/supernumeraries for this reading; serving as “motivators”, these critical cast members will guide the audience through the participatory elements of the presentation, including gestures, manipulation of simple props (paper), and brief rhythmic chanting/singing.
We seek creative, communicative, enthusiastic leaders who are comfortable and eager to be in front of an audience, and hope to assemble a diverse group that reflects the broader DC community; Performance experience is valuable but not required; openness and a willingness to commune with the gathered audience is key.
Audition Information:
There will be no live audition - just make us a short video speaking to what interests you about the project, and why you’d like to be involved!
Each motivator will receive a $900 stipend (roughly $30/hr), paid on a 1099.
Full availability is ideal; partial availability will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Video submissions are due by May 15, 2022.
